Pope Leo XIV spent a quiet night at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he remains hospitalized after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung, the Vatican reported on Wednesday.

The pontiff, 71 years old, underwent surgery on Tuesday in a procedure that lasted approximately 90 minutes. According to the Holy See, he woke up normally after the surgery and is now awaiting the results of tests that will determine whether the cancer has spread.

The Vatican has noted that the tumor was detected early and was localized. However, specialists caution that the prognosis depends on the stage of the disease and whether there are signs of spread.

Juanita Mora, a medical spokesperson for the American Lung Association, explained to AFP that the prognosis is usually favorable when the disease is detected in its early stages.

The Holy See expects the recovery to take about a week. All of the pontiff's audiences have been canceled through Oct. 20.
