CNN, MS NOW and Politico announce lawsuit against Trump for barring them from White House, president says ban was over 'fake news' that poses 'a threat to our national security'

"The White House is not launching an attack on the free press, something I value highly. It is launching an attack on FAKE NEWS, something that has spread like a cancer throughout our beloved United States of America," the president wrote on Truth Social.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico announced in a joint statement that they will sue the Trump administration for denying them access to the White House. In response, Donald Trump asserted that this is not an "assault on the free press," but rather on "FAKE NEWS," which "has grown like Cancer" and is "a threat to our National Security."

Trump announced on Friday that he would ban these media outlets from the White House as punishment for spreading "fake news."

"The government does not decide what the press reports or publishes"

"We notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today [Monday] to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes," the statement reads.

The media outlets maintain that the White House revoked their journalists' credentials "without notice or due process" because it "objected" to their coverage. "Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public's right to independent journalism, free from government interference," they stated.

The five major television networks suspend their joint coverage of the White House

In an unusual move, the five major U.S. television networks announced on Monday that they were suspending their joint coverage of the White House—where one network films on behalf of all television media outlets during the day—in solidarity with CNN.

CNN was scheduled to serve as part of the White House press pool on Monday.

"The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting," ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC stated in a joint release.

This decision means there will be no television coverage of Trump's trip on Monday to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he was scheduled to meet with several foreign leaders.

"Corrupt, deliberate, widespread, fully coordinated, and completely out of control"

In response, Trump posted on Truth Social, lashing out harshly against fake news, which he said "has grown like Cancer" and is "a threat to our National Security."
