The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that heavy rain, storms, and snowfall in mountainous areas will characterize the weather conditions this Thursday, October 29, with unstable conditions that could last through the weekend in several regions of the country.

According to the latest short-term forecast from the Weather Prediction Center (WPC), the main concerns are concentrated in the south and southwest, where a combination of tropical moisture and low-pressure systems will lead to heavy rainfall.

At the same time, a cold front will move from the Mississippi Valley toward parts of the Northeast, while the Northwest will continue to see snow in the higher elevations of the Cascade Range and the Rocky Mountains.

Texas and New Mexico under threat of flash floods

The highest risk of heavy rain this Thursday is concentrated in parts of western and central Texas, where the WPC has assigned a level 2 out of 4—classified as "light risk"—on its flash flood threat scale.

The agency explained that the arrival of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, combined with the atmospheric energy associated with the remnants of the Tropical Cyclone Vance, will promote the formation of storms and episodes of heavy rain.

New Mexico could also experience significant rainfall, especially in areas near western Texas.

Weather authorities warn that rainfall could accumulate rapidly in certain areas, increasing the risk of flooding on roads, in urban areas, and in vulnerable areas.

The risk forecast covers the period from Thursday morning, October 29, through Friday morning, October 30, according to Eastern Time.

Society

The polar vortex is forming over the Arctic: Models point to a possible weakening midway through winter, against the backdrop of a very strong El Niño

Carlos Dominguez

A cold front will bring rain and thunderstorms to the Northeast

Another notable phenomenon is the advance of a cold front that will bring rain and thunderstorms from the Mississippi Valley toward parts of the Northeast.

The system will continue to move eastward, causing changing conditions in the regions it passes through.

Despite the passage of this weather front, much of the eastern United States will continue to experience unusually warm temperatures for late October, according to NWS forecasts.

The official forecast identifies rain and thunderstorms as the main effects of this system, although their intensity and distribution will vary by region.

Snowfall in the Northwest Mountains

In the northwest of the country, conditions will be different.

The American actress Susan Saint James died Monday at the age of 80, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, as confirmed by a representative of the actress to People magazine.

Saint James rose to fame for his roles in the hit series 'McMillan & Wife,' in which she co-starred with Rock Hudson, and 'Kate & Allie,' alongside Jane Curtin. Her career made her one of the most popular actresses on American television during the 1970s and 1980s.

In a statement released by People, her family remembered her as a generous, warm, and dedicated woman to helping others. Her loved ones noted that she devoted time and attention both to her loved ones and to people she had just met.

A career marked by major television successes

Born on August 14, 1946, in Los Angeles as Susan Jane Miller, the actress grew up in Rockford, Illinois. Before settling in Hollywood, she worked as a model and spent some time in France.

Her big break came in 1968 with the series The Name of the Game, in which she played Peggy Maxwell, a research assistant. That role earned her an Emmy Award in 1969, solidifying her career in television.

In 1971, she began starring in 'McMillan & Wife,' an NBC police drama in which she played Sally McMillan, the wife of the San Francisco police commissioner, portrayed by Rock Hudson. Her role in the series earned her additional Emmy nominations.

Years later, in 1984, she returned to television with 'Kate & Allie,' a CBS comedy about two divorced friends who decide to share an apartment in New York while raising their children. The show ran until 1989 and earned her two more Emmy nominations.

She also appeared in films such as 'Love at First Bite' (1979) and How to Beat the High Cost of Living (1980). In 2008, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of her career.

Society

Tom Skerritt, Tom Cruise's mentor and personal guide in 'Top Gun,' dies

Alejandro Baños

A family tragedy that shaped his life

After finishing Kate & Allie, Saint James significantly reduced her television appearances to focus on raising her children and her family life.

In 2004, she suffered a tragedy when her youngest son, Teddy Ebersol, 14, died in a plane crash in Colorado. Also on the plane were her husband, television executive Dick Ebersol, and another of her sons, both of whom survived.

After that loss, the actress became involved in initiatives to support other families who had lost their children.

In addition to his artistic career, Saint James was known for his philanthropic work, particularly with Special Olympics, an organization dedicated to promoting sports and the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.

His Family and His Legacy

Saint James had been married since 1981 to Dick Ebersol, whom she met while appearing as a host on Saturday Night Live. The actress is survived by her husband, four children, seven grandchildren, and a sister.

According to People, the singer had celebrated her 80th birthday in August, surrounded by family and friends.

Her passing marks the end of the career of a figure who helped transform the portrayal of women on American television.

The report argues that these practices gave foreign defendants preferential treatment over U.S. citizens in comparable situations.

Just the News

Trump border enforcement cuts fiscal, criminal costs of illegal migration that amnesty would restore

Just The News

Instructions for modifying charges and avoiding deportation

One of the main findings pertains to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.

According to training documents from 2019 and 2023 obtained by Congress, prosecutors were instructed to negotiate alternative charges that would not automatically trigger immigration consequences.

The recommendations included avoiding certain references in conviction records:

Weapons offenses: seek plea agreements that did not specify the presence of a firearm.

Domestic violence: avoid having the family or romantic relationship between the defendant and the victim listed as an element of the conviction.

Sexual offenses against minors: consider alternative charges that did not include the victim's age as an element of the crime.

The documents also considered the possibility of negotiating guilty pleas for offenses deemed legally impossible, which, according to the committee's analysis, could prevent certain immigration consequences.

The report questions these guidelines, arguing that the priority of preventing deportations may compromise the transparency of criminal records and the enforcement of immigration laws.

Queens had a specialist to review immigration consequences

The investigation also examines the practices of the Queens District Attorney, Melinda Katz.

According to documents from her own office cited by the committee, the district attorney's office employed an immigration specialist to advise prosecutors on plea agreements that would avoid immigration consequences deemed disproportionate.

In 2020 alone, that specialist was involved in 21 cases in which sentences were reduced or overturned. In addition, the district attorney's office recommended that then-Governor Andrew Cuomo grant pardons in six other cases to prevent deportations.

The committee also obtained an email in which a Queens prosecutor described a plea agreement as "immigration-safe," even though the defendant had admitted to several crimes and served time in prison.

These actions do not necessarily mean that all beneficiaries were undocumented immigrants. The venue's security cameras recorded the moment when the rapper assaulted Diaw with a bottle of tequila, striking him four times in the head and once on the shoulder. He was found guilty of assaulting Rihanna, who was his girlfriend at the time, prior to the 2009 Grammy Awards. In 2012, he was involved in an altercation at a nightclub with Canadian rapper Drake, during which French basketball star Tony Parker was injured. A few years later, he pleaded guilty to assaulting a fan in Washington in 2014.

In July, Brown was found liable by a Los Angeles jury in a civil lawsuit stemming from the attack by one of his dogs on his then-housekeeper María Ávila, which occurred in December 2020 at his residence in Tarzana, Calif. As a result, Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, must pay $12.9 million in damages for negligence.
